Wheatsheaf Inn
About This Spot
Stepping into the Wheatsheaf Inn in Stone Allerton feels like slipping into a cherished corner of the English countryside where time eases its pace. This is a welcoming country pub that carries the warmth of a family home, softened by the gentle crackle of a fire and the quiet hum of friendly conversation. Whether you linger at the bar with a well-poured local ale or settle into one of the cozy nooks, the atmosphere invites a relaxed, unhurried enjoyment of the moment.
At the heart of the experience here is a menu that whispers of tradition, smoke, and the sea. The charm lies in the focused, carefully curated selection, showcasing dishes where smoking is a craft and seafood takes center stage, all prepared with a thoughtful nod to local roots. It’s the kind of place where a plate of smoked fish isn’t just a meal, but an invitation to savor a genuine connection to the landscape and people who bring these flavors to life.
The pace is gentle, the hospitality sincere. Staff move attentively without ever rushing, and there’s a real sense of care in every detail — from the way the smoked mash complements a hearty brisket, to the comforting touch of a perfectly balanced panna cotta on a chilly evening. The pub’s quiet charm is further enriched by its openness to well-behaved dogs and a community spirit that feels both rare and deeply grounded.
Relaxed gatherings, whether intimate dinners or special celebrations, find a natural home here. The Wheatsheaf Inn doesn’t shout for attention; instead, it rewards those who seek out the quiet pleasures of rustic hospitality, honest drinks, and thoughtfully prepared food. It’s a place where subtle smoky notes, hushed conversations, and shared moments linger long after the last course is finished.

We attended for my brother's wedding. The venue, the staff and the food & drinks were phenomenal. Couldn't have wished for better

A very welcome return to the tradition of fine food at this most rustic of country pubs. The 'new' owners and staff do a great job of preparing a small selection of wonderful food (much of it smoked next door). If you love smoked food and/or fish, you are sure to find something you like; just be aware that many dishes would benefit by choosing to add veggies. To round-off the meal, we usually retire to the adjacent cafe (and shop) for a lovely coffee. Cyclists are particularly well looked after with the provision of locking points, air pump and availability of some spares. In conclusion, a great place to meet and eat.

Incredible food. We got the mixed plate of smoked fish which was one of the best I’ve ever had. Then mains. Delicious. Also the place and staff are wonderful! What more can you ask for?

Just WOW. Small menu, always a good sign, local drinks, all the smoked food done next door. Now our restaurant of choice in the area.

After a long journey, despite the late hour and the closed kitchen, the host offered to prepare a warm meal for us and treated us to an incredible, delicious and tasty fish burger. We were invited inside as it was getting cold, even though they were technically closed. Most of the ingredients are made on-site by the chef, which is a huge plus of this place! We will definitely return there! I highly recommend it.

A charming garden and a hidden gem! We ate in the garden and it was gorgeous! (The pub is currently being refurbed). The staff, and service were fab and really friendly! Lovely setting amongst wildflowers. We shared the beef brisket burger and the smoked salmon burger, both absolutely delicious! And topped off with a yum banoffee pie! We’ll be back again, and to visit the smokehouse shop!

Had arrived too early to our holiday cottage and this place was just a few minutes away so we called in for lunch. We had the cheese platter and fish platter and were blown away by the quality of it, was so so good as was the service from the super lovely lady that served us and talked to us about what we were eating. This place is an absolute gem and perfect for fish lovers, 100% recommended visiting.
